Las Vegas welcomes flights from Heathrow Airport October 22 2009
More than ever, Las Vegas is counting on customers from outside of the United States. This weekend, the effort to bring in business from overseas will get a major boost with a new daily non-stop flight from London Heathrow Airport. A weak dollar is making Las Vegas an international bargain. Combine the exchange rate with room rates already drastically lower than years past and you've got a recipe for tourism. This is extremely attractive to visitors from places like Great Britain. And beginning this weekend, the options for visiting Las Vegas will be expanding. For the past decade, Las Vegas has had regular service to London via Virgin Atlantic, which flies non-stop to Gatwick Airport. But the more useful Heathrow Airport has never had flights from Las Vegas - until now. Signs at McCarran are already posted, letting travelers know that the British Airways flights begin Sunday, bringing in what could be a valuable source of new tourism business. "International travelers stay longer and spend more. All our studies show that," says McCarran Airport Director Randy Walker. Walker confirms that Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman will be on board the inaugural British Airways flight, accompanied by his usual contingent of showgirls. Goodman was in London promoting Las Vegas. But it's not just Europeans that are increasingly important in keeping our hotel rooms occupied. While our domestic economy is in recession, another new direct flight from Mexico City just began. Itzel Cardenas sells tours to passengers arriving from Mexico. She say she's seen a surge of interest lately. "CityCenter - people are very interested, opening in December and everything." The biggest source of overseas customers, however, remains largely untapped: China is the big prize. But non-stop flights there are, perhaps, still years away. The closest Las Vegas came to establishing flights to China came seven year ago when Singapore Airlines launched service from Hong Kong to Las Vegas. But the airline cancelled the route just a few months after it began. The new British Airways flights from Las Vegas to Heathrow Airport will depart every day at 7 pm. A source of international visitors to Las Vegas, Great Britain currently ranks number three behind Canada and Mexico.
